Construction of inner panels

As part of my 8 panel I thought of using one picture that will stretch out across the 4 panels that will open up.

I cropped the picture and then divided into 4 sections, 2 of with were for the disks inside the digipak.

I then edited the picture by changing the contrast and the colour hue.

I first cropped the picture so that the shoes were the centre of the frame.

I divided the picture down the middle so that these would the be first inner panels that would open up to the panels underneath.

I wanted to make the shoe in the picture stand out more and the colours brighter, so I did this by changing the brightness and contrast and also the colour hue

Back cover construction

To make the back cover look authentic I added a bar code from the internet and put it in the bottom left corner. I also added writing on the bottom to also make it look authentic and changed the record label company's name to the one that I made up and also the copyright. The font is the same that I used on the front cover.

Here is how I constructed my copy right logo and my record label logo:

The most professional looking logos are usually the simplest ones. So for this logo all I did was draw a black circle and then put the initials in the circle, in white, towards the top of the circle. I then added 3 thick white lines below the letters and then duplicated the logo on to the back cover.

I then put the front cover and the back cover side by side so when I edited the picture, I'd want it to complement the front and not look out of place

This is how I made my record label logo.

The name that I had chosen for my record label was 'Awesome Records'.

I wanted to keep the logo as simple as possible

This is another logo that I made and added to my back cover.

I added a DVD logo on the back because I am including a DVD disk of the music video in my digipak as an addition to the CD. I then put the track list on it to give it a finished look.

Front cover construction

I started off by using the image that was in my 3rd album cover draft and then re-sizing it so it was a perfect square.

I started off by changing the brightness and the contrast so that the image was more clear and brighter.

I wanted the album cover to reflect the blue hue of my music video so I increased the blue in the picture. This also made the background brighter so that the leaves were again, more prominent.

I then finished off the album by adding the text from the draft on to the newly edited photo.

Adjustments to the music video

When filming, not all of my shots turned out the way I wanted to and the light and hue of the picture didn't match and correspond to the rest of my video.

For example in this shot, there is more of a green colour in the picture but the rest of my video is more of a blue.

I fixed this by changing the colour grain within the shot. In this particular shot I lessened the green and made the percentage of blue so it looked brighter and clearer.

The issue I had with this shot was that it was darker than i had hoped and the jacket of the woman slightly blended into the background.

To fix this I increased the saturation and lessened the contrast. Even though I only adjusted 2 things on both of the shots but it was very effective in achieving the outcome that I wanted.

Analysis of lyrics

Satellite Heart- Anya Marina

So pretty, so smart
Such a waste of a young heart.
What a pity, what a sham
What's the matter with your man?

This verse is talking about a woman that is beautiful but went for the wrong man. Someone who isnt right for her and doesn't treat her well.

Don't you see it's wrong? Can't you get it right?
Outta mind and Outta sight
Call on all the girls, don't forget the boys
Put a lid on all that noise

The relationship is dysfunctional and people tell her this but she ignores it and tries to cover it up instead of dealing with the situation. The man and the woman try and distract themselves from the fact that they are not working by going to parties and trying to have a good time.

I'm a satellite heart, lost in the dark
I'm spun out so far

Satellite heart could refer to the distance she could feel from everywhere and how lonely she is, she feels out of place and doesn't have a sense of belonging. The more she tries and tells herself that she is OK, the  further she drifts away. Satellites are in space so she could also feel that she is engulfed in this darkness that represents different things, for example: depression, anxiety- that her partner might leave her, fear.

You stop, I start
But I'll be true to you

The effort put into the relationship is one-sided and it seems to be on and off, with the man repeatedly being unfaithful and cheating. But she states that she will never cheat on him and always be true to him.

I hear you're living out of state
Running in a whole new scene

He had moved on from her and into a new place, out of state. It's completely different to where he used to live, with her.

You know I haven't slept in weeks
You're the only thing I see

She cant stop thinking about him.

I'm a satellite heart, lost in the dark
I'm spun out so far, you stop, I start
But I'll be true to you

I'm a satellite heart, lost in the dark
I'm spun out so far, you stop, I start
But I'll be true to you
No matter what you do.
Yeah I'll be true to you

Focus Group of the Album cover

Responses from Focus Group

The favorite draft within the focus group was draft number 3.

The feedback was that it was the one that looked more to fit its purpose for example the leaves in the woman's hands looked like a heart and the fact that she is hiding her face with this shows distance - relating to 'satellites'. It also looks more unique and fitted to an album cover whereas 1 and 2 look more generic, especially 1. They also liked the fact that it was more centralized compared to the other pictures and how the text and lines framed the focus point and made it stand out.
However, the notes for improvement was that it would look better if the background was a little bit brighter and more blue. Also there needed to be more definition of the woman's forearms compared to the blurry background.

Drafts done on Photoshop

These drafts that I've done on Photoshop include pictures that I have taken but they haven't been manipulated in any way i.e. they have no filter over it. I just wanted to see what it would look like as a rough copy.

1)

2)

3

I tried to vary the pictures that I used and changed the positioning of the text in each one. I did this because I wanted to show how the different compositions work together and how they each draw attention and focus to different parts of the photo. I also tried making it look like an 'indie' music album cover by the white font and lines and dots to emphasis they writing and which one is the song title and artist name.

I will be showing these drafts to a focus group and list the key feedback and try to amend the initial picture into the final product.
