Analysis of Questionnaire

I will be giving my reasons for asking the questions that I did and sharing my results. From the results, I will be drawing conclusions from these results as to what I will include in my music video, digi-pak and advertisement.

1) How old are you?
This question has been asked to find out what age range my target audience is for my products.

The results from this question were mostly people aged 17 so, therefore my music video, digi-pak and advertisement will be aimed at people aged 15-25.

2) What colours would you associate with indie or alternative rock?
This question is to determine the colour scheme that will be consistently used throughout.

  • Black and White
  • Red
  • Pink
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Other__________________

The colours that were chosen the most for this question are Black, White and Red.

3) What instrument would you most likely associate with indie or alternative rock?
This would relate to what type of song I pick, e.g. if the most occurring option chosen is guitar, I might pick a song where the guitar contributes to the song more than any other instrument.

  • Violin
  • Drums
  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Washboard
  • Other_________________

In the answers, the instrument that people thought suited to alternative rock genre was the guitar.

4) What type of music videos do you prefer?
This question would help me determine what type of music video to shoot.
  • Performance
  • Narrative
  • Concept
  • Abstract
The music video that people most enjoyed watching was a narrative video with a concept, or concept with elements of narrative in it.

5) What kind of vocalist do you prefer?
This would help me pick the song and also the gender(s) of the actors I will cast in the video. E.g. if the singer is male I may cast a male actor.
  • Screamo
  • Male
  • Female
  • Male and Female duet
  • More than one female
  • More than one male
  • Other_________________

The most liked vocalist type that people chose was a female singer, therefore, as well as having a female vocalist, I will cast a female actor to be the main role.

6) What kind of tempo do you like best?
This will not only help me decide on what song to choose but also what kind of tempo I should include in my music video. For example, a slow song would be accompanied by a slow motion video in places.
  • Upbeat
  • Slow
  • Medium
  • Other__________________
The most chosen option was a medium tempo song

7) Do you prefer acoustic or electric instruments?
This will help me decide on the song and also what kind of instruments I might show on the music video as the performance element- if I choose to add performance into it.

  • Acoustic inruments
  • Electric instruments
  • Both
  • Other_________________
The most chosen answer from this question was acoustic instruments

8) What is your favourite decade of music?
Most music these days may remind or pay homage to music of the past so I may choose a modern song with an old feel to it for example a remix, or an old song altogether.
  • 1960's
  • 1970's
  • 1980's
  • 1990's
  • 2000's
  • 2010's
The answers for this question was spread out among all the decades. This shows that my target audience is knowledgable of music in the past and the present. This means that they would have an open mind about the sort of music they listen to and know about different styles and genres.

9) Other than indie rock or alternative rock, what other genre(s) do you listen to?
This may help me decide what kind of sub-genre I could choose as the genre lines are blurred most of the time. For example, pop-rock is a merging of the genres pop and rock.

_______________________________________________________________________________

As the answers of this is very broad, this shows that my target audience does not solely listen to alternative rock or indie rock, they listen to a range of genres and music. This is supported by the previous questions.

10) In a song, what is more important you?
This gives me an idea of what I should focus on- the music or lyrics. For example if I link the video to the lyrics or focus on the music and relate that to the video.
  • The lyrics
  • The music
  • Both
  • Other_________________________

From this question, I found out that the audience thing both the lyrics and music is important.

11) Do you prefer mainstream artists or 'unknown' artists?
This helps me decide on what artists to use.
  • Mainstream
  • 'Unknown'
  • Don't mind
'Don't mind' was the most chosen option. This means that people focus more on the music rather than the popularity of the artist.

12) What do you think makes a good music video?
This tells me what my target audience wants to see in a music video.

Quality picture and sound. Flows well. Good composition. sophisticated use of editing. Good structure. Good story, camera angles, shots, movement, good scenery.

By conducting this questionnaire, I have found out what my target audience wants and expects from music products and I will try and use most of this information to create my products. However, not all of these fit with the image I have in mind and because I am in charge of directing the music video, producing the Digipak and producing the advertisement I will have the last say in everything I do so it conveys the messages that I want it to to the audience.

Music video analysis

The Arctic Monkeys

R U Mine?      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQH8ZTgna3Q

This music video by The Arctic Monkeys is a performance/concept video all edited in black and white. Throughout the video, all of the lyrics are lip-synced, giving a performance element to it because it is as though Alex Turner- the lead singer is singing to the camera, with Matt Helders- the drummer, drumming certain parts of the song and the other band members singing backing vocals.

The first part of the music video is filmed in a car with all of the band within it. It is filmed on a camera that is handheld and that can be moved around. The camera is being moved around during the first part of the music video, in the car. This allows for different compositions on the screen, different camera angles and movements. I think this is a very clever way of adding variety to the scene and adding a sense of closeness and involvement that the audience might feel, as well as this, eye contact is maintained making the audience feel as though they are being looked at.
This has been done without the use of cuts so the whole music video is shot in one shot.

The second part of the music video has more of a performance element with the band getting out of the car and then playing their instruments but before that they also use the reversing camera of the car on the dash inside the car and films it as the lead singer crouches down and lip-syncs into the song. This also adds another dynamic to the video and makes it more interesting.

This music video raises a lot of questions. This has been done because the song title is in itself, a question: 'R u mine?'.

We see them in a car in the first shot, we can see them driving and the car moving but where are they going? Who is in the back seat? They are also both wearing sunglasses which is mysterious because we cant see their eyes and it is night so there isn't any point of wearing sunglasses. When Alex does take his off, it is filmed through the reversing camera on the back of the car so it isn't very clear. The girls with the masks and the hats on are also very mysterious because we cant see their face and we don't know why they are there or who they are. They also only appear in the beginning of the second part of the video so that would mean that they were in the car the whole time hiding in the dark with another member of the band. when they arrive at the place they were driving to, it looks quite barren and empty except for the props that are used so the question arises of where they actually are. Also, there are 4 members of the band but we only see 3 of them in the video so where is the 4th member?

I think the whole concept of this video is mystery and uncertainty. It also keeps to the continuity of The Arctic Monkeys as their albums include black white and grey and so is this music video.

The performance element is present due to the lip-syncing, eye contact into the camera and playing of instruments.

The whole music video is well structured because it has a constant theme running through it and it is interesting to watch. There is also performance in it so it is not solely a concept video.
